Polythene Range
All of our polythene is supplied by XL Horticulture, the biggest importer of polythene in the UK.
Polythene is a flexible translucent material. It creates a micro-climate within a polytunnel so your plants grow better than they would if not protected.
Modern technology allows manufacturers to add compounds to the film. The XL range of films has up to 8 layers with different filters in each layer. An additive called Metallocene is also included to make the film stronger but thinner.
All our covers include Anti-mist/anti-drip properties as standard.
We offer several different varieties with different properties for different uses.
We recommend the use of [fusion_one_page_text_link link=”#SuperThermic”]SunMaster SuperThermic EVO AC[/fusion_one_page_text_link] for most polytunnels particularly those in West Wales. It has the best and longest-lasting anti-condensation system available, and the highest level of frost protection available in a film. Anti-fog/anti-drip layer lasting lifetime of the polythene. It also has diffusion additives (opaque/milky appearance) to ensure that light entering the tunnel is diffused meaning plants are better protected from scorching. In very hot sunny weather diffused covers will be cooler than a clear cover. It has an 8 year warranty and expected life of 8 to 12 years.

Our most popular polythene for horticultural polytunnels. Recommended for use on most tunnels, for general growing. Particularly recommended for West Wales weather.
For vegetables, flowers, soft fruit, shrubs and bedding plants. For over-wintered nursery stock where frost protection is required. Offers up to 2 degrees of extra warmth, non-drip, anti-fog and anti-condensation properties.
SunMaster SuperThermic EVO AC is an 8-layer polytunnel film. It has the best and longest-lasting anti-condensation system available, and the highest level of frost protection available in a film. Anti-fog/anti-drip layer lasting lifetime of the polythene.
In simple terms the superthermic properties of the polythene helps trap and preserve higher temperatures inside the structure for much longer – in heated structures, this means fuel savings can be achieved. A beneficial side effect of the added additive is that light entering the polytunnel is diffused – scattering light evenly throughout the structure.
Use SuperThermic EVO AC for all crops where frost protection is important.
Normal polythene and glass block the UV below a certain level (350nms), SunMaster films give you the advantage of growing indoors without losing the benefit of the outdoor sunlight.
The appearance is colourless.
Plants are slightly more compact, colours are more pronounced, particularly reds and blues and you get stronger rooting and higher ani-oxidants in fruit grown under SunMaster films. The outdoor levels of UV give thicker cell walls and therefore greater disease resistance. Pollinators are much more active as they use UV as a large part of their visible spectrum.
SunMaster SuperThermic is the ONLY superthermal film on the market. There are others with a similar name but they do not offer similar thermal performance.

Recommended for use on most smaller tunnels, for general growing. For all crops where colour, especially red and blue, is important. Use for vegetables, flowers, soft fruit, shrubs and bedding plants. For crops that you would usually grow outside. For over-wintered nursery stock where only slight frost protection is required.
SunMaster Diffused comes with anti-fog/anti-drip as standard. This film is designed with 60% diffusion which is optimal for UK growing conditions for most crops. The diffusion properties of the polythene scatters the light as it enters the film reducing shadows; helps reduce tip burning and moisture stress on the plant.
Appearance is milky white.

SunMaster Cool has been designed for growing plants that like to be kept cool in the Summer but still like a lot of light.
SunMaster Cool uses the latest microfine Aluminium diffuser which makes your tunnel about 25% cooler in bright sunlight than a clear film.
Can also be used for animal house and storage.

Used where full sunlight is needed, especially in the far north where daylight hours are less. Use SunMaster Clear for all crops where colour is important – especially reds and blues – and where high light levels in the early part of the year are important. Good for over-wintered nursery stock where only slight frost protection is required. Bear in mind that, with only a low level of diffusion, this film will be hotter in the summer than a diffused film.

Another diffused cover which has the benefit of an additive which holds the infra red rays in the tunnel, so retaining the heat for longer, the bigger the tunnel the more effective this becomes. Ideal where you are looking to extend the growing season and where heating the tunnel. For vegetable, flowers, soft fruit, shrubs and bedding plants. For all crops which are to be heated. For vegetables, flowers and nursery stock. For late in the year, over wintered, or early crops. For Organic soft fruit.
Use Sterilite SuperThermic for all crops which are heated and where the advantages of the UV blocking IPM will be advantageous, for example organic growing. Great for vegetables, especially salad crops.
UV blocking is proven to reduce fungal and aphid attacks and give a greater foliage area. Especially designed to block lower end of the light spectrum, aphids can’t see to fly and won’t colonise and botrytis and mildews are short lived without the correct light.
Reflective properties of polythene can keep tunnel up to 10% cooler than clear polythene
XL SuperThermic films have been proven to give protection down to -7ºc frost protection. Can give up to a 5ºc protection without heat.

Use SunMaster CrystalTherm for all crops where maximum light is essential. SunMaster CrystalTherm is the first horticultural film in the World to be made from 7 layers and has a patented new Anti-Drip system which considerably outlasts conventional systems.
It has an ultra smooth external face to repel dirt and delay the onset of algae. It is immensely strong but the clarity is similar to glass making it very suitable for hobby tunnels.

Developed to simulate woodland shade, offers full UV Spectrum but with shading. Use SunSmart Green for all crops which are naturally shade loving such as Ferns, Hostas, Hellebores, Laurels, Ilex, Camellias, Violets, Rhododendrons etc. and any other plants whose natural habitat is shade or semi shade.
The spectrum of light inside a SunSmart Green Tunnel is designed to be very close to the spectrum of light you would expect to see under a forest canopy. This means that whilst the tunnel is well shaded, this doesn’t make plants leggy and drawn as they would be under a white film.
Also one of the best polythene covers for animal housing as allows sunlight and moonlight transmission, allowing animals to keep with their natural circadian rhythms.

Polythene Cover Properties
A bit about thickness
25 years ago Polythene was 180 or 200 mu thick and they only lasted for 2 or 3 seasons so the thickness of a cover has nothing to do with how long Polythene will last or how strong it is. Consider this, a thinner cover means less weight to recycle.
Technology has come on a long way in 25 years and Polythene no longer needs to be so thick to make it strong, with the use of modern co-polymers. The difference between 150 and 180 mu is 30-100ths of a millimetre – a very very small amount.
The Polythene we supply with our Polytunnels is all 150 microns thick, except the EVO which is 180mu and has an anti-drip/anti-fog additive on the inside so your plants, and you, don’t get dripped on when there is condensation in the tunnel.
Diffusion
In very hot sunny weather diffused covers will be cooler than a clear cover. The diffusion properties of the polythene scatters the light as it enters the film reducing shadows; helps reduce tip burning and moisture stress on the plant. Ensures all plants receive equal light. Measured as a a percentage of total light.
Ultra Violet Transmission
Full or Blocked Full transmission means the UV is open and encourages stronger bushier plants. Botrytis and mildew need UV to reproduce and survive so by Blocking the UV transmission diseases and pests struggle and are more easily controlled.
Thermicity
Thermic filters/additives within the layers of the polythene film reflect back the short wave infra red that is stored during the day time and is released as long wave infrared at night from the plants, pots, and soil. Ensures and maintains a stable and optimum temperature within the polytunnel, especially during colder nights. Benefits include 10% to 30% reduction in heating costs and significantly less frost damage.
Anti-Mist
Polytunnel polythene with anti-mist properties have an additive added the inside that reduces mist within the polytunnel.
Light Transmission
Refers to the amount of PAR (visible/available) light that enters the polytunnel through the film. Measured as a percentage of total light. The more light the better unless you’re looking for a shade tunnel in which case SmartGreen polythene may have just the properties you need.
Anti-Drip
Reduces condensation so the water runs down the cover as a thin film of water rather than droplets which can spread disease or damage cuttings.
